Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV - 2)
Herpes simplex virus – 2 also known as genital herpes is an incurable, highly contagious viral infection. Genital herpes affects approximately 45 million Americans, and is more common in women (1 in 4) than men (1 in 5). Transmitted through sexual contact, herpes is not effectively prevented with a condom due to skin-to-skin contact with infected lesions or secretions.
Symptoms:
First appearance of symptoms usually takes place 2- 20 days after infection, though most people show minimal symptoms or no symptoms at all. Symptoms are often mild and may include:
- Itching or burning sensation
- Red patches with white blister-like or painful open sores around and in the vagina, penis, anus, lips, nose or mouth.
- Fever
- Flu-like symptoms
- Pain in the legs, buttocks or genital area
Consequences & Effects:
While blisters or sores are open, infected individuals are extremely infectious and can also self-infect other parts of the body. Sores heal after several weeks but may recur. Recurring of symptoms can happen often or just a few times depending on one's body and the strain of the virus. Women who develop a first episode of genital herpes during pregnancy may be at increased risk for premature delivery. If infection is passed to the newborn during childbirth it may result in possible brain damage or even death.
