Duties:

This position will plan and implement a comprehensive syphilis elimination plan in Massachusetts. Specifically, this position will be responsible for managing a broad range of initiatives related to the primary and secondary prevention of syphilis through state-wide and community-based prevention activities, case management of infected individuals and their partners, trainings for health care providers and other professional groups, and overseeing contracts with community-based agencies. The development of these initiatives will be done by the ongoing review and analysis of surveillance and behavioral data. This person is responsible for chairing Massachusetts Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) State-wide Advisory Group and representing the MDPH on a variety of internal and external committees related to the promotion of health through the prevention of HIV and crystal meth use. The primary focus of syphilis elimination efforts is MSM, who represent approximately 70% of infectious cases in Massachusetts.

Review syphilis morbidity case and field reports to identify emerging disease and behavioral trends. Prepare written reports and articles describing trends in syphilis and high-risk groups. Conduct field activities that include interviewing cases and locating partners to reduce and prevent syphilis transmission. Assist in QA/QC activities to improve field and surveillance data. Through the analysis of data, develop community-based public health interventions that raise awareness and support the primary and secondary prevention of syphilis. Such interventions include development of websites, trainings, outreach, mobile van testing services, and technical assistance to Community Based Organizations (CBO) and other venues frequented by high-risk individuals, such as gay bars, bathhouses, and websites. Review all syphilis case investigations with the Front Line Supervisors and the Disease Intervention Specialists. Provide training and education to clinicians, laboratorians, and CBOs to ensure appropriate screening and treatment of syphilis and how to interact with MSM clients. Work with community groups to ensure they are trained in all aspects of prevention activities, especially as they relate to high-risk populations (i.e. – MSM). Prepare portions of grant applications, including background, implementation, and goals and objectives. Perform all activities as Chair, MDPH MSM Advisory Group (includes approximately 70 members), including meeting management, speakers, agendas, and workgroup activities. Act as contract manager to monitor performance of vendor agencies. Represent MDPH on internal and external committees, including the HIV Massachusetts Prevention Planning Group and Crystal Meth Workgroup. Collaborate with other programs in the Department to promote programs that reduce the transmission of sexually-transmitted diseases. Assist Division Director in policy development activities and other special projects. Conduct trainings to educate the general public, providers, and community groups about STD prevention. Participate in outbreak response efforts. Extensive travel throughout Massachusetts.
