Job Description: The Iowa Department of Public Health, Division of Acute Disease Prevention and Emergency Response is actively seeking a physician (M.D./D.O.) to serve full time as the Deputy State Epidemiologist and Medical Director of the Center for Acute Disease Epidemiology (CADE).

The successful candidate will provide medical leadership and oversight to investigations of infectious diseases and other acute disease outbreaks, clusters, and individual cases; working closely with a team of six regional epidemiologists, two master's level epidemiologists, two nurse epidemiologists, disease surveillance officer, EIS officer, a public health veterinarian, and local public health officials.  In addition this position will serve as liaison with local health practitioners, medical personnel, and other state and federal agencies during epidemiological investigations and respond as appropriate.

This position will provide epidemiological and medical consultations to Immunization, TB, HIV/AIDS, STD, and Hepatitis programs; will be responsible for preparing reports; making recommendations for prevention and control measures; and publishing findings of unique public health importance.  This position includes regular work with the media.

The Medical Director position will provide medical and epidemiological oversight for public health preparedness activities.  This will include assistance with program development, implementation, and response during a threatened or actual public health emergency.  The successful candidate reports to the Deputy Director of the department and division director of Acute Disease Prevention and Emergency Response while having a direct working relationship with the director of the Iowa Public Health Department and the state public health medical director/epidemiologist.

Candidates must have a minimum of Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) with experience and expertise in infectious disease and epidemiology, and must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Iowa.  Preference is given to candidates with a Master's Degree in Public Health, Health, Health Management, or related field.

Minimum Qualifications    Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
