Accomplishments
- Organized a national network of STD directors and program staff.
- Conducted a critically needed "Needs Assessment" of STD project areas
in 2001 to quantify infrastructure status and needs.
- Co-sponsored a meeting with the National Conference of State Legislatures
to educate state legislators on syphilis elimination issues.
- Developed a system to detail state and local STD staff to assist high-incidence areas in the syphilis elimination effort.
- Co-sponsored congressional briefing on STDs with American Social
Health Association.
- Advised and helped implement key CDC and other federal initiatives such
as syphilis elimination, infertility prevention, STD treatment protocols, Healthy People 2010 Objectives, viral STDs and managed care.
- Co-sponsored two STD and Managed Care Institutes to assist STD Directors with changes in a constantly evolving health care environment.
- Sponsored muliple regional meetings on the national syphilis elimination effort.

Advocated to increase federal funding for STD programs – more than $54 million in new dollars have been appropriated since 1998
- Participated in key CDC initiatives such as syphilis elimination, infertility prevention, Healthy People 2010 Objectives, STD Treatment Guidelines, NCSD/NASTAD/CDC MSM Workgroup, and input on the new Comprehensive STD Prevention Services (CSPS) 5-year grant application
- Successfully negotiated a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) that is now part of base grant totals for all STD Project Areas
- Developed STD Program Core Components to assist Program Directors with a roadmap focused on public health interventions specific to STDs for sustainable, effective programs
