NCSD is launching its first SPEAKS session on May 22, which will include information on how to navigate the policy landscape within state health department settings. This session aims to empower public health professionals to help them better understand the policy levers and leaders available for them to access.
This session will provide a “policy 101” perspective on the health department landscape.
It will include an overview of the Association of State & Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), support health department STI program staff in navigating the policy process, offer practical non-partisan tips on how to work with state legislators, and educate participants on how to build effective relationships with state legislative liaisons and state health leaders. The session will feature experts from ASTHO and two state STI program leaders from Washington and Texas with professional experience working with internal policy staff to advance STI program needs.
What are SPEAKS Sessions?
SPEAKS = Strengthening Policy Engagement, Assessment, and Knowledge with Stakeholders.
NCSD’s goal behind SPEAKS sessions is to offer professionals working in the STI sector an opportunity to sharpen their policy skills by accessing virtual workshops and webinars that center policy-related themes.
